At First Meeting House Nursery School our goals are to help your child learn: to be comfortable in a classroom; to make friends; to ask for help; to be independent; to use classroom materials; to recognize symbols, concepts and rhymes; and to investigate and explore. Children learn from one another, from guidance by the teachers and by using classroom materials. Each child is encouraged to try new activities.

Monthly curriculum themes are integrated through the imaginative play, stories, art, cooking, music and guided learning activities. Hands on experience in natural science is woven into the curriculum throughout the school year. A sample of our current themes includes Our Community, Down on the Farm, Our Place in Space, Oceans & Waterways, Dinosaurs, Native American Culture, Transportation, and Insects. We enhance our learning experiences with visits to Marblehead Harbor, Crosby's grocery, the dentist office, the Historical Society, Brooksby Farm, Fort Beach tide pools, the Franklin Street fire station and a ride on the MBTA bus! Invited guests to our school each year may include, Native American storytellers, beekeeper, doctor/nurse, female firefighter, commercial pilot, lobsterman, musicians, and parents with a variety of talents. Each class also enjoys a program of "Music, Movement and Make Believe" with Dara Vanremoortel twice each month.

Daily "meeting" time gives children the opportunity to develop speaking and listening skills through shared stories, discussions, songs, calendar and weather, Mystery Bag, Alphabet Bag, and Show & Tell. We read classic children's literature, fairy tales, age appropriate non-fiction and information books, and popular children's authors such as Jan Brett and Eric Carle.
